Just want to go ahead and give credit where credit is due and tell everyone that the interaction between Cap and the other soldiers was all Pat's doing!
I really like how he wrote the characters..... I thoroughly enjoyed reading it as I'm sure the rest of you will!
It's been a pleasure working with Pat and I look forward to continuing this collaboration!

A soldier lost... I DIG IT!
I always felt one of the reasons Steve Rogers was such a boring character, and why I like Bucky as Cap so much, was because he was too perfect. Here though, we see a soldier tortured by war and torn by his thirst for revenge. Love it!
Simplistic beginning, but powerful! This was great. it's hard to start any title, no matter the character, but you guys did a great job with this one.
5 stars.

Woohoo! Bonus points to Pat and myself for tarnishing our favorite star-spangled hero just a bit!
I love a good tragic hero! But, don't worry, we're not going to go all DKR dark on Cap..... (or will we?)
(insert dramatic, fiendish music here)

A solid debut issue with a great deal of potential to build on. There was a lot of 'Ultimates #1' to this issue (Am I right in thinking even a name or two?) which is no bad thing. I really enjoyed a lot of the interaction between the soldiers, and the tension with the Skull. It was also great to see things from Cap's point of view when he came to.
That said, I do think the issue had its weaknesses- which is only natural for a first issue, particularly with co-writers who haven't written together before, nothing to worry about. A lot of the writing felt quite shallow to me, with little depth explored- and when we got insights into Cap's mind, they tended to be quick one-liners which didn't go far enough. The pacing also felt a little uneven; particularly with the transition to the modern day. But those are early bumps, and I'm sure they'll be smoothed out as the series continues. I look forward to next issue!
As to the covers; the image of Cap and the skull locked in battle falling through the air was really striking; and the manic hatred in the skull's eyes was brilliantly depicted. The second cover was more straightforward but no less well drawn; a great image of Cap looking resolute!

Possibly Kowalski lol. It always seems to be a militaryish name and that's why I picked it ;D. Same as Conway. Cam did a great job waking Cap up from his freezing and really having him freak out about what was happening. Awesome stuff. I guess we could have gone a bit further into what Cap was thinking but you'll be seeing plenty of that in this arc due to him reacting to the next world. Pacing? Well we did just skip like what, 60 years? Cool. See you next issue, Kevin! Yeah Joey didn't just do an awesome cover he did TWO awesome covers. I've had the pleasure of working alongside Joey on Aquaman and man he always delivers fantastic covers.

thanks for the kind words and honest feedback, Kevin!
First issues are always tough, and working with another writer takes getting used to, but we're easing into it. I think you'll find that the next issue will give a bit more insight into Cap's emotions..... but I won't say anymore.....

It is definitely a solid issue. I found it funny that there was a character named Kowalski. For some reason according to television/movies every unit had a Kowalski. LOL. Not saying that's a bad thing either. I can't wait to see where this leads to. I agree with Ammunition88 that it takes a bit for a writer to find the right voice, if that makes any sense. Anyway, keep it up.

A well done start. It's some solid WW2 stuff and some classic Cap/Skull hate. The former is written as kind of hokey (but I suppose that goes with the territory) and the latter is the hateful, manipulative villain we all know and love.
I'm looking forward to seeing the inevitable "culture shock" and Cap's personal journey in the present time. So, great to both writers and J.J. for the cover and i'll see you guys next month.

A fine opening and very good characterization through out. I have to agree that there are a couple of week points, but it was a very strong opening as well.
The cover's were phenominal! Absolutley brilliant!!!
Great work and can't wait to see where this goes.

As I've said before, great covers.
Good, solid first issue, with a few things that surprised me. The "new" take on Cap's descent into the ocean, utilizing the Red Skull in this case, was a slight twist on the 616 origin. And the death of Bucky was also explained differently.
But it was the actual characterization of Cap that was different. Far from the lily-white, always-doing-the-right thing soldier we get a man conflicted in his emotions and letting them get the best of him. Also, it was interesting to see other American soldiers see him in a negative way, as opposed to the blind hero worship we typically see. I agree there is an "Ultimates" feel here. I admit I'll have to get used to this.
Looking forward to seeing Cap adjust to the modern world, but I hope you'll throw in some WWII tales as we go along as well.
Good start.

thanks for the kind words guys.
I'll be the first to admit that there are some weaknesses to this story, but, I see that in everything I write lol.... All I can say is I plan to improve in all the areas I fell short.
And Aaron, I promise you'll be seeing some more WW2 stuff in the future... that's all I can say for now lol

Really good start to the series - I've never personally been that interested in Cap until, ironically enough, 'The Death of Captain America'. So it's good to get a fresh perspective from the very beginning! I'll be on to #2 now.
